Raid Frames: The default pull-out raid frames aren't spectacular in terms of the amount and quality of information displayed. Some are just poor design decisions, like making an item that is essentially a must have, have a gigantic choking point that isn't a skill test but one of pure time (see journeyman's boots when they dropped in Najena).īasically starting this thread to see what people think about MMOs in regards to their good/bad points on UI/gameplay, and if there is any way for developers with their limited resources to come up with "good enough" default ways of playing all of the games content.Īs someone who hasen't done high level raids can you explin what the mods do for you that vanilla can't? Some of these UI/gameplay deficiencies come in not presenting information well, or at all, that the player needs to play the game. Now, I don't know how much they tried to design around showeq, mostly because it's not a tool everyone had and did require a certain level of technical skill to implement, but it did get used a lot, and it was because of huge, gaping gameplay and UI faults/omissions. But EQ was a mess, and a lot of camping was just a time sink that WoW and other games have worked to design around having to dump 36 straight hours in one spot to get an item. EQ became, for me as a high end raider, considerably more manageable with showeq. I'm not /really/ torn on the subjet: they currently make WoW way more playable, but I think the questions for MMOs in general is that of, is some third party product so pervasive that you have to design for it? This got another line of thought going: Do the WoW designers build encounters that cant be beaten with the default tools the game provides? Do they design instead knowing that mods exist to aid in the gameplay?Īnd then to my complaint: Why is the default UI in WoW not good enough to give the player the information they need to beat an encounter? Or: Why are encounters built to be nigh unbeatable if you only had the default UI?
I said "it should be," and got "do you really want to go back and raid molten core for the rest of your life?". I asked something along the lines of, "is wow playable at the high end without mods," and of course the answer is a resounding "No". Recently, I was having a discussion about World of Warcraft regarding that use of mods.
